There is no greater contribution we can make than to cultivate our own personal holiness by living a life of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Advent is a time of anticipation as we prepare for the coming of the Child Jesus. He first came into the world in Bethlehem, greeted by shepherds and kings. Now, it is our turn to welcome him as he is born again in our hearts this Christmas. Like Israel, we look to his coming with expectation, knowing that he is the Messiah who will establish the Kingdom of God on earth. This kingdom will continue to grow until Jesus's final coming in glory. We connect all three of these comings in Advent: his birth in the stable, his coming anew into our hearts, and his coming again at the Last Judgment. We must arise from sleep and look to the Lord with joy and hope. His coming fulfills all our hopes and desires and gives the world all that it truly needs. Advent is a time to grow in our longing and expectation for the fulfillment of all things and the definitive establishment of Jesus's reign. He is coming soon, and we must be ready to greet him.

To ready our hearts and our minds together, all Exodus men around the world will adopt a common Plan of Life this Advent, including:

God is reaching out to help us in our battle against the forces of evil. After focusing on the celestial battle with the fallen angels in St. Michael’s Lent, we now turn to the battles we face in the world. God equips us with the weapons we need, just as Judas Maccabeus receives a sword to strike down his enemies. A hundred and sixty years before the coming of Christ, the Jews rose up in revolt against the Greek Empire that was imposing pagan ways in the Holy Land. Ordinary men banded together to push back and restore the ability to freely worship God. There is much we can learn from this battle, as we too band men together in fraternity to live faithfully to God in the midst of an insurgent paganism.

During Battles of Autumn, we will be reading the book of First Maccabees, which narrates the story of the Jewish uprising. We will also focus on sustaining a simple and sustainable Plan of Life. This includes identifying the key battles we must face in our daily life and forming a plan of attack with the support of our brothers. God is calling us to lead other men to him and to awaken to the battle raging within and around us. Our reflections will unpack how we can lead other men to be active in battle and support one another in this fight.

As you identify the key area of the spiritual battle raging in your life right now, you will be able to form a Plan of Life to guide your time in Battles of Autumn. We will build upon a baseline line of disciplines for all men, keeping us united as a global fraternity. For Battles of Autumn, this baseline includes:

• 20 minutes of silent prayer every day
• Daily Scripture Readings & Reflections
• Examine your day
• Abstain from meat on Fridays
• Take a cold shower on Fridays
• Offer up one holy hour each week
• Weekly fraternity meeting

Behind the veil of our senses, there's a host of spiritual realities that, while invisible, dramatically impact us every day. To become who we were made to be, we need to enter the spiritual battle.

St. Michael's Lent is an ancient practice of spiritual warfare in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel. St. Michael is the special guardian angel of all God's people and our ultimate wing man in slaying the dragons of sin in our lives and in our world. We're all familiar with the 40 days of penance leading up to Easter Sunday; popularized by Saint Francis of Assisi in the Middle Ages, Saint Michael's Lent is a summertime Lent where we prepare our hearts for the Feast of Saint Michael, or Michaelmas Day, on September 29th.

By embracing a lifestyle of prayer, acts of self-denial, and fraternity, it's our prayer that, through the 40-days of St. Michael's Lent from Exodus, together we might experience the uncommon freedom of Jesus Christ, enter the spiritual battle for our souls, and become who we were made to be.
